Textile Design – Level 1
Can you tell us a little bit about your background before coming to study here?
I did Textiles as one of my A Levels at college and then I decided to take a year out and do a Foundation Diploma at Exeter College, I just didn’t feel ready to go to university yet and it gave me so many more skills.
What made you decide to come to Leeds to do Textile Design?
I’m really interested in research so I liked that it’s a really academic course. I didn’t want to do just practical, so it’s nice to have a mixture.
What kind of things have you been doing so far on the course?
I’m currently looking at repeat patterns but there’s also a lot of research and market research within that looking, at other artists and designers. In the other modules we are looking at the history of design and how that has influenced art and design today.
What has been the most enjoyable part of your course for you so far?
I think the repeat patterns because it’s moving onto computers. It’s digital which is a different medium that’s really nice to work in.
How have you found being a student in Leeds?
I really like it because it is such a student city. There are so many other students here so it feels safe. It’s very vibrant and there is always something going on which I like.
What are you most looking forward to from the rest of your course?
I’m looking forward to the specialising. I think I might look at fashion as opposed to interiors. Once you go into that you can work in more depth and different mediums.
Is there anything that has surprised you about the course?
One of the modules looks at a lot of software that I haven’t used before. It’s out of my comfort zone but it’s really interesting. It’s all the Adobe software which can be difficult to use but it’s really useful.
