Matthew Jackson

Graphic and Communication Design – Level 2

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself before coming to Leeds?

I went to college and studied graphics. I looked at a few universities but I really liked Leeds because of it’s mix of the academic and creative side of things. With this course there’s the idea that you are doing something to fulfil a purpose, it’s not just making for makings sake. That side to the course definitely made it appeal to me over course at other universities.

Is there anything about the course that has surprised you?

Yes, there’s a lot of variation on the course which is good. It’s not just pure graphic design, you get to work with students on other design course too. We get to look at design as a whole rather than just looking at each discipline separately.

What kind of projects are you working on at the moment?

Second year is a lot more about digital work. First year is centred more on things like book design and advertising, but this year is has looked into different areas like the packaging brief.

What have you enjoyed most about second year?

There’s a lot of opportunities to grow as a designer. You’re not restricted to doing just one thing within the field. There’s also a lot of competition briefs that we can get involved in like the D&AD brief coming up.

What are you most looking forward to about the rest of the course?

I’m looking forward to doing the Year in Industry because it’s a chance to get some hands on experience. I want to look into going into an agency but I would like to look into doing something in packaging as well. I like the fact that packaging has the ability to influence your decision about buying a product off the shelf.

Do you think that Leeds is a good city for students?

Yes, there’s lots of things going on and also there are lots of cool design agencies in the city.
