Fashion Design – Level 1
Can you tell us a little bit about your background before coming to Leeds?
I’m from Sofia, Bulgaria and before coming here I was studying at the School of Mathematics. A lot of people were quick shocked that I have gone for something very different to what I was originally studying but this is what I enjoy doing and what I want to do in the future.
Where did your interest in fashion design come from?
I always wanted to do something in the design area but for a long time I hadn’t decided what exactly I would do. About two years ago I started doing some design work and doing things more connected to fashion design. That’s how I ended up applying to Fashion Design.
What made you decide to come to Leeds to study rather than anywhere else?
When looking at different universities Leeds came quite high in the rankings, so this was one of my first choices. I liked that the course was more directly linked to fashion design than some of the other universities and that it had a lot of discovery modules.
Now that you are here and studying at the School of Design, how have you found it?
So far it’s been quite busy. Before I came a lot of my family and friends would say that I wouldn’t have many lectures or things to do because I was studying a design subject but that isn’t the case. We have a lot of projects and research to do. I’m very busy but I like it that way, I prefer to be busy.
What sort of projects are you working on in your first year?
We have had two projects that revolve around research and design development. The first is a group project but the second is individual work. I’ve been working on an essay for design theory and I have had weekly work submissions for my fundamentals module. We’ve also been doing garment technology.
What’s been your favourite part of the course so far?
I’m enjoying garment technology the most so far. I’ve always wanted to learn to sew with professional machines and I’ve found it one of the most interesting parts. The other thing that I like is design development because this is the part where you actually design and draw your clothes.
What are you most looking forward to going forward on the course?
For now I just want to learn the main techniques that I need and to grasp the design thinking which is needed. I’m also looking forward to creating an individual collection in final year.
How have you found moving to Leeds? Is it a good city for international students?
I think it’s a great city to live in as a student. It’s not too small and it has everything you need. The city centre is close to the university and there are a lots of events.
Personally I wanted to be in a bigger city but not as big as London because I knew would get lost there.
