Research Interests: nonwoven materials and technology; textile science and technology, textile manufacturing, structure-property relationships, biomaterials manufacturing, design and manufacture of fibre-based devices for consumer, healthcare and industrial sectors.
- Prof. Russell is a textile engineer with a background in both academic and commercial industrial research. He leads a nonwovens research group of 25 students and staff supported by the EPSRC, Innovate UK, National Institute for Health Research, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation (USA) and numerous companies. Research focuses on the manufacture and process-structure-property relationships of textile materials, particularly technical textiles and nonwovens and has attracted research income of >£12 million. The research has led to new fabrics industrially applied in a raft of medical, healthcare, consumer and industrial products with critical performance requirements. Outcomes include micro-cavitied nonwoven fabrics with directional specific permeability enabling controlled liquid distribution, water dispersible medical devices, a new genre of inherently insecticidal textiles for combating insect vector-borne disease and multiple industrially licensed technologies. Additionally, in 2005 Prof. Russell founded NIRI Ltd, a rapidly growing University of Leeds spin-out company that serves the global nonwovens industry employing 26 staff.
