Biography

Dr Bandara comes from a mechanical engineering background. His doctoral research was in the application of high response servohydraulics for guide bar control in warp knitting technology. His research work led to the realisation of UK’s first warp knitting machines with computer controlled patterning. He has developed several novel measuring instruments, notably a non-contact tension measuring instrument applicable to textile yarns and such materials, through four EPSRC funded research projects which he was involved as principal investigator or co-investigator. He is currently involved in further development and promotion of these devices, all of which make use of textile mechatronics for their functionality.

His teaching duties have been in weaving technology, statistical and quality control techniques and fabric mechanics, at undergraduate and masters levels.

He has supervised several PhD and many MSc research projects.

Research Interests

Instrumentation  and control,  application of smart materials, smart textiles, textile mechatronics, the measurement of woven fabric structure, weaving machine mechanics and control
