Biography

After graduating from the University of Leeds, Elaine Evans worked as a garment technician in two roles, including made-to-measure, before joining the School of Design in 2001, and is now a Senior Teaching Fellow in Fashion. Her teaching specialism is garment technology, construction and pattern cutting.

Elaine is a member and secretary of the Yorkshire Fashion Archive executive committee, and jointly oversees the management and care of the Yorkshire Fashion Archive, which is housed in the School of Design.

Research Interests

Garment construction and pattern cutting, use of nonwoven fabrics in apparel applications, 19th – 21st Century fashion, ethical fashion.

Pedagogical work with particular reference to practice based / design based subjects, including the use of blended learning materials in a practice based setting: Elaine secured a Faculty Teaching Development award and ADF funding to support development of a series of learning support materials relating to Garment Technology.

Elaine co-manages the Yorkshire Fashion Archive, which is a research hub within the Fashion area at the University of Leeds’ School of Design which explores interactions between clothing and social / cultural history. The Archive informs teaching with the Fashion area, and a major project is underway to catalogue the YFA pieces using a museum standard database, in order to make the YFA more accessible to students and other interested parties.  Elaine enabled the purchase of the database software by securing TESS funding and supervises volunteers interested in working with the collection.
