Student Conference on Sustainable Futures 2017

The University of Leeds hosted its first Student Conference on Sustainable Futures 2017 on Friday 3rd February 2017. The conference theme – ‘Sustainable Perspectives on Future Challenges’ – included work from a wide range of disciplines; from social and natural sciences, and the arts, to languages and humanities, whose work considers some aspect of sustainability. This event showcased research, projects and creativity from across the sustainability spectrum.
The conference accommodated a variety of presentation formats, with oral presentations along with a poster exhibition on display in Parkinson Court throughout the day. Mary Loveday Edwards, currently a second year PhD student in the School of Design, was awarded a Highly Commended – Most Original Concept award for her paper “The use of nostalgia at the ideation stage of design – opportunities for sustainability”, which examined some of the many areas and applications in sustainability offering potential opportunities for permaculture design utilising nostalgia as an affective element. Mary is supervised by Dr Bruce Carnie.
