Joe Gilmore design selected for Fedrigoni 2018 calendar
January 29th, 2018
Work by Joe Gilmore, Teaching Fellow on BA Graphic and Communications Design, features in this year’s Fedrigoni 365 calendar.
365 is a 2018 calendar commissioned by the Italian paper manufacturer Fedrigoni. The lushly printed book features the work of leading UK creatives who were asked to graphically respond to a given number/ date.
Printed throughout in one colour, silver PMS 877U on Fedrigoni’s Sirio Ultra Black stock—the result is a striking tome with 365 single-colour designs.
In mathematics, a binary number is a number expressed in the base-2 numeral system, which uses only two symbols: zero and one. I used a visual system of oblique lines that are expressed as either ‘on’ or ‘off’ according to their angle. My result is an expression of the binary number 5: 101.
I added leading zeros in order to form a grid of lines (in the plain binary number system, leading zeros are not significant).”
