Dialogue in Place: Volume III / Shifting Perspectives is a collaborative project that has evolved from a dialogue between Joyce Lyon (University of Minnesota) and Andrea Thoma (School of Design, University of Leeds).
The two artists have maintained a transatlantic studio conversation about place for almost twenty years, reflecting on how one might consider location in relation to ideas of landscape, memory, representation and abstraction. In new bodies of work both artists consider place in relation to time, intimacy, pilgrimage and dwelling, and explore how different media facilitate different modes of visual thinking.
For the exhibition in the School of Design the artists will consider the actual setting and its potential to contribute to shaping an engagement with various visual and conceptual approaches to our understanding of place. In a public talk/lecture both artists would discuss their creative process and the implications of place in their artistic practice.
Lyon and Thoma have brought their work together in two earlier exhibitions. Dialogue in Place (2001) traveled between Bretton Hall College, University of Leeds and the Katherine Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota. Dialogue in Place II: A Visual Conversation was presented at Form+Content Gallery, Minneapolis (2012).
Hear their ‘collaborative talk’, which took place on 9 February 2012 at Regis Center for Art, University of Minnesota in Minneapolis here.
Work will be on display in the Foyer Gallery, Clothworkers Central Building.
